The Board of Directors is the governing body of the Central State University General Alumni Association.
Members of the board are elected at-large and/or appointed.   Typically, four (4) directors are elected each year to three-year terms as a member of the GAA Board of Directors. Board of Directors must be regular financial members of the alumni association and annual donors to the university.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS BIOGRAPHIES

 

Kevin Bean -- Kevin is a1978 graduate of Central State University holding a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Technology. Over the last 29 years he has been employed by the IBM Corporation. Kevin currently holds the position of Program Manager for Client Satisfaction. Kevin is the President of the CSU Atlanta Alumni Association. In addition to his service on the GAA Board Kevin is President of the Council of CSU Chapter Presidents (COPs). Kevin is a Life Member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. He is a founder and past member of the Alpharetta-Smyrna Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi. Kevin also volunteers as a Mentor and is an Executive Board Member of the 100 Black Men of America, South Metro Chapter; which he serves as Financial Secretary. Kevin is married, and resides in Atlanta Georgia.

 

Charles A. Colbert, Jr. -- Charles was a member of the 1965 Central State undefeated basketball team. He left the institution, returning to graduate in 1974. During the years of 1974-1991, Charles worked as sales manager for Sheraton Hotel and executive mill representative for Great Northern Paper Company. In 1975, Charles founded CMC, Inc., a meeting planning and graphics company. He resides in Crete, IL and is married with five children.

 

Ronald E. Cosey -- Ronald E. Cosey received a BS in Business Administration from Central State University in 1970 and an MBA from Xavier University in 1982. During his career, Ron worked for Detroit Bank and Trust, Shell Oil, Cargill, Inc, and retired from the Borden Corporation with more than 25 years in purchasing. He is a current member of the College of Business &Industry’s “Business Advisory Council”. Ron works on special projects and serves as a substitute teacher in the Columbus Ohio Public Schools. He is married with two sons, one a 2004 graduate of CSU.

 

Dr. Yvette L. Coursey -- Yvette is a 1963 graduate of Central State and has more than 30 years experience at the federal, state, county levels of government and the nonprofit arena in administrative and managerial positions. She has worked on behalf of such diverse client populations as the economically disadvantaged, elderly, mentally ill, chemically dependent and persons with various medical conditions. She earned an MSW from Atlanta University and DPA from Nova University, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. She currently serves as CEO for Sickle Cell Foundation of Palm Beach County, Inc. She is a Charter member and president of the Everglades (FL) Alumni Chapter, a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and the National Coalition of Black Women. She also serves on several boards and is involved with various community and civic organizations. She very active with her church, Grace Episcopal Church, in West Palm Beach, Florida.

 

Vernon N. Ford -- Vernon is a 1970 graduate of Central State. During his career, Vernon held positions at Aluminum Company of America, where he worked until being named President of Vancouver Extrusion Company and later President of Halethorpe Extrusion Company, two wholly owned subsidiaries of Alcoa. After retiring from Alcoa, he was hired as Vice-President of Sales and Marketing at Philadelphia Gear Corporation. Vernon was named Executive Vice-President and Chief Operating Officer of the Harlem Globetrotter to develop a strategic plan to regain market share in the Family Entertainment Market. Vernon is currently President of Building Maintenance Services, Inc, a building maintenance company serving the greater Phoenix, AZ market. He has served as Chairman of the College of Business and Industry Advisory Council for the past 17 years, President of the CSU GAA since 2004 where he has worked diligently to make the GAA a self sustaining organization. He also serves on the CSU Foundation Board of Directors, who has been responsible for the building of the new dormitories, Foundations I and II. Vernon is a lifetime member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc, a lifetime member of the NAACP, and a founding member of the Executive Leadership Council, an organization composed of African American corporate leaders dedicated to promoting diversity in corporate America and filling the pipeline behind us.

 

Wendall Garth -- Wendall is currently the president of City Driving Academy, a family owned and operated company founded in 2004. Wendall received a B.S. in Sociology from Central State in 1981, and has worked with young people in some capacity every since. He formerly worked as a Social Worker Supervisor for the Department of Youth Services, a Program Director for Catholic Services at Parmadale and a Job Developer for the United Labor Agency. Most recently he worked for Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland Ohio. He has served as president of the Cleveland Alumni Chapter of Central State and as Vice president of the Council of Black Colleges of Cleveland Ohio. He has been instrumental in managing many successful fundraisers and events, and continues to be dedicated to supporting educational opportunities at Central State University. Wendall is married to his college sweetheart Sandra (McGunia) Garth. Together they reared two children, Serita and Wendall Jr., who are also CSU graduates.

 

Fred J. Grigsby, Jr. -- Fred retired from the position of Vice President of Human Resources for Edison International and Southern California Edison in 2006. Fred began his professional career in human resources management with Westinghouse Electric Corporation where he work for 29 years. He graduated CSU in ’69 and served as class president graduating from the College of Business Administration. Later, Fred graduated from the Executive Program at the Colgate Darden Graduate School of Business at the University of Virginia and the Reactor Technology Program for Utility Executives at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Department of Nuclear Engineering. In addition to serving as 1st Vice President on the GAA Board, Fred serves as secretary on the board of United Way of Orange County California and chairman of the board of the homeowners association of The Cliff at Cupecoy, Cupecoy, St. Maarten, N.A. He is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and a proud father of 4 sons and 5 grandchildren.

 

Quelina M. Jordan -- Working towards fulfilling her aspirations to building wealth and a commitment to personal development, Quelina graduated from Central State in 1993 with a degree in mathematics and a minor in education.  During her matriculation, she pledged Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, volunteered as managing editor of the Gold Torch Newspaper and was elected to serve on the National Technical Association board of directors.  A long-time supporter of her alma mater, she is a GAA Life member and past president of the Washington DC Alumni chapter.  After earning a MBA - Management of Global Information Technology at American University and being selected as a a Presidential Management Fellow, Quelina worked as an analyst with the US Departments of Commerce (DC) and State (Ghana). As president of Centralian Consulting Services (1997 - 2007), she consulted governmental entities, companies and not-for-profit organizations seeking to "adapt, adopt, & advance performance" through information technology (IT). Returning to an early interest in education, Quelina is currently working towards a Master in Education degree at Kent State University while teaching entrepreneurship and technology in Cleveland's public school district.  She is a proud parent of a pre-teen daughter, who has already committed to attending CSU to study political science (minor in dance) and become a Central Belle.

 

Marion McDowell - A 1970 graduate, Marion L. McDowell’s dedication to young people and her community is well documented by the numerous awards and honors she has received by dedicating her life and career to the improvement of the educational process and access to education in the arena of health care. She has served in various capacities in her roles as a Program Manager and as an Assistant Dean in the College of Health Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She is the founding member and President of the Wisconsin Association of Black State Employees (WABSE); Conference Program Chair and Regional Director for the National Association of Minority Medical Educators Inc. Additionally, Marion is a co-founder of the Milwaukee Chapter of the Central State University Alumni Association and Silver Member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.

 

Shirley McKinney -- Shirley is a 1975 graduate of Central State with a major in Special Education. She went on to earn a Master’s degree in Learning Disabilities. She currently works for the Cleveland Metropolitan School District as a Career Assessment Specialist. Shirley is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.

 

Mark A. McMillian -- Mark has over 25 years of experience in social services.  He has worked at the Cuyahoga County Department of Children and Family Services for 13 years, the last seven as the administrator of the Professional Development Department.  He graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology from Central State University in 1980 and Master of Education Degree (Adult Learning and Development) and Master Public Administration Degree (General Public Administration) from Cleveland State University in 2000 and 2005 respectively.  He also has a Certificate in Executive Education from the Harvard University Kennedy School of Government Senior Executives in State and Local Government Program. Mark has shared his knowledge on delivering training programs through a variety of experiences.  As Chair of the statewide Regional Training Center Directors’ Committee he advocates for supporting evidence verified child protective social work practice.  A subject matter expert on Competency Based In-Service training systems he has been called upon to provide consultation with state and national decision-makers.  He has advised foreign governments and Non-Government-Organizations (NGO) on the establishment and evaluation of training systems.  He is pastor of the Bethlehem Institutional Church and serves as District Superintendent of the Ohio Northeast Jurisdiction Churches of God in Christ.  He is a former chaplain in the USAF Auxiliary/ Civil Air Patrol, and 1997 Chaplain of the Year for Ohio Wing.  He and his wife Karen are proud parents of seven children.

 

Dennis McNeal -- Dennis J. Mc Neal is a 1966 graduate of CSU majoring in Physical Education. He retired from the Cincinnati Public Schools after 32 years of service. In 2004 Dennis opened a Chartered School managed by National Heritage Academies and he is in his 4th year at Orion Academy. Dennis has served on the GAA Board since 1992 in various positions and now is serving his 8th year as Parliamentarian. Dennis is married to Marcella with and has two sons and two grandchildren.

 

Betty R. Kennedy Shepherd -- Believing that it is extremely important to share life’s successes, Betty is continuously involved in many civic, church, and community organizations throughout Maryland. As a major contributor to Central State University, she and her husband have established the Richard & Betty Shepherd Endowment Fund, and will be inducted into the University’s 1887 Legacy Society later this year. The 1997 CSU Alumnus of the year has served as a volunteer treasurer in numerous organizations, including her graduating class of 1971. Her motto is: If it is to be, it is up to me. She is married to Richard Shepherd, ’71 and has two children.

 

Maxton A. Singletary -- Maxton graduated in 1981 with a BS degree in Industrial Technology. He went on to obtain a Master of Science from Central Michigan University in June of 1993. He also graduated from the Defense Systems Management College, at Ft Belvoir, VA in 1993. Maxton is employed at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, OH as a Program Manager in Information Technology. He began his career with the Air Force as a Cooperative Education student in March of 1979, while attending CSU. Maxton, presently serves on the CSU College of Business & Industry advisors council; Past President of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Dayton Graduate Chapter and also Past Great Lakes Regional Director of Undergraduate Affairs. Maxton, resides in Centerville, Ohio and is married to Tracy Fisher Singletary (CSU graduate ' 82), they have three sons; Maxton III, Austin, and Landon.

 

Suzanne F. Stantley -- During her career, Suzanne held management positions at Leo Burnett Advertising, Burrell Advertising, Proctor & Gardner Advertising and co-founded Image Advertising Group. In 1990, Suzanne co-founder Black Expo Chicago and Black Expo Community Development companies she serves as CEO. After receiving a BA in business administration, Suzanne went on to earn a MBA from Atlanta University. She received the CSU School of Business’ Distinguished Alumni award in the 80’s. Today, in addition to the CSU GAA board, Suzanne serves on three other boards and conducts a variety of seminars targeted for small businesses and health disparities.

 

Frances Kathleen Welch -- In 2005 “Kay” ended a 42 year career with Troy, Ohio City Schools. Kay graduated from Central State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Administration. She holds a Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Alaska. She also did graduate studies and continuing education at the University of Heidelberg, Heidelberg, Germany, the University of New Mexico, University of Texas in El Paso, University of Akron, Wright State University, and University Dayton. Kay chairs the GAA Legislative Awareness Committee. She also serves as chair for the Legacy Committee, and serves as GAA Chaplain. Kay served as president of the Dayton Alumni Chapter for 11 years. In 2006 Kay was inducted into the Central State University Alumni Achievement Hall of Fame. She is a member of the University of Dayton Chapter Of Phi Delta Kappa Honorary Fraternity. In 2002 she received the C.J. McLin Outstanding Service Award and in 2006 she received the Volunteer Appreciation Award. She is 55 year member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Kay is married to Army Lt Col (ret) Theodore Welch. They have one son, Theodore and two grandchildren.
